September 4, 2004 - Chrissy Flatt

Chrissy Flatt brings her talent to the Market at 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Music Tent.

Excerpt from TEXAS MUSIC...
Chrissy Flatt was born in Austin, raised in Waco, flirted with the idea of being a punk rocker in San Antonio and finally morphed into a first-class singer-songwriter upon returning to Austin, where, if justice revails, her fling with obscurity will be a brief one. Flatt's voice is a thin but pretty instrument, just good enough to get her songs across, and that's what matters, because her songs on Wings of a Butterfly are some of the best you're likely to hear all year. Alternately evoking the raw, sensual poetry of Lucinda Williams and the delicate melodic instincts of Aimee mann, Flatt delivers one winning tune after another, drawing equal inspiration from rock, pop, folk and honky-tonk. Among the highlights are "I Wish He'd Take Me", which packs all the shivers of a David Lynch film thanks largely to producer Eric Hisaw's spooky surf guitar, and the closing "Daredevil", a mischievously catchy but loving tribute to an older sister. Wings of a Butterfly is a marvel of a debut, but don't be fooled by its title - fragile it's not. -

August 28, 2004 - Joanna Ramirez & Will Indian

Joanna Ramirez

Dallas bred Joanna Ramirez draws on her family heritage in her music. Her father, Joe Ramirez, led a popular blues band in the '60s called The Jumping Jacks. Joanna's first album, "Satisfy Me", shows off her own powerful voice that has been compared with Etta James and Big Mama Thornton.

She started performing professionally in 1993 forming the Soul Providers, a blues band with strong jazz and funk grooves. She moved to Austin in 1998 intent on forming a band rooted in the blues tradition and met guitarist J.P. Lilliston and saxophone and keyboard player Jack Paine who together formed a group called Shake 'Em On Down. The band changed its name to feature Joanna as the front person and originator of the songs. Scott French joined them on drums and Satisfy Me came out in 2001.

Come listen and groove with Joanna and Will Indian this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Music Tent in the street!

August 21, 2004 - Elizabeth McQueen and the Firebrands

Elizabeth McQueen and the Firebrands isn't your typical Americana band. Leading With a voice that has been compared to both Patsy Cline and Dinah Washington, McQueen sings her way through a mix of music that has as much to do with the straight ahead honky-tonk of Ernest Tubb as it does with the quirky roots rock of Rockpile. Come hear it at from 10 am to 11:30 am at the Market.

McQueen's vocals are anchored by the outstanding musicianship of the Firebrands. Guitarists Andrew Nafziger (Bruce Robison) and Chris Miller (Marcia Ball, Hollisters) along with bassist Lindsay Greene and drummer Brian Smith shine with a mix of stunning creativity and solid technique. Along for the ride are Casper Rawls on guitar (Toni Price, the Leroi Brothers), Jim Murphy on steel (Asleep at the Wheel, Johnny Paycheck) and John Michael Whitby keyboards (Asleep at the Wheel). You'll get warmed up from your peppers at the Market and the tunes of Elizabeth McQueen. Look for her cd, The Fresh Up Club, for sale Saturday and more info is at http://www.elizabethmcqueen.com

August 14, 2004 - Hard to Make a Living (HTML)

There is something about this group that gets people to come back to the Market to listen to them, or to come to the Market for the first time to check them out. HTML is our anchor band that Market-goers will be able to enjoy once a month during the rest of the Market season! This is their date for August.

Hard To Make A Living is a versatile, four-piece acoustic band that features guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin and upright bass. They play a mix of western swing, bluegrass, old country/honky tonk, and some traditional swing/jazz.
