Sweet Music
Rumbullion 10 a.m.

The spark for the band Rumbullion happened in 1996 when Pete Nalda shared with Scott Allen his collection of accordion music, particularly recordings of the 1930’s French master Gus Viseur. Pete and Scott had met ten years earlier while living in Los Angeles, working together on a rock album for a Paris-based record label. By coincidence the two met again, playing in a band in Austin; they soon began to experiment with an instrumental accordion-based folk-jazz sound all their own.
Allen had little knowledge of traditional accordion music but was drawn to the free-flowing stream of valse musette, a Parisian style that would later usher in the much jazzier "hot club" sound of Django Reinhardt. Nalda is of Basque descent, and had had since his childhood an ear for New World folk accordion music with European roots.
The duo Rumbullion (an archaic word for Rum) began performing at parties and beer gardens around Austin in the late '90s, and soon acquired bassist Bill Lawson. He, like Mr. Allen, was infected with otherworldly accordion music. The trio soon played original compositions, often worked out in regular gigs at the High Life Cafe in downtown Austin. In 1998 they released their first CD, and in 1999 they played at Austin’s South by Southwest music festival.
The band then met percussionist Jeff Hogan and were unable to resist the spark that his playing gave Rumbullion. The band has continued to reach out to a small but growing audience, making occasional road trips and playing at an ever-increasing variety of public and private events. In 2002 the band recorded its second CD, which promises to deliver a further evolution of its eclectic instrumental sound.
The band has booked a gig with the Austin Farmers’ Market to broaden their audience. The venue is a natural choice, Allen says.
"Rumbullion has long played at a wide variety of events that included great food, from gallery openings to Bastille Day celebrations," Allen says. "We think the Austin Farmers' Market might be a good opportunity to reach a new Austin audience. Good food and good music—a perfect combination!"
Come enjoy Rumbullion's music this Saturday at 10 a.m.
