January 14, 2006 - TOMATOES! FLOWERS!

In the Austin Farmers' Market....



SATURDAYS
Just have to say, you gotta come for the TOMATOES (some even certified organic)! They are tasty and bright red, grown by four farmers in the market for a year-round crop! Who would have thought that you'd be able to get tomatoes in January from LOCAL FARMS? You can now!

Welcome back and also a hello/howdy to these folks, coming 1/14: Arnosky Family Farm with beautiful flowers; Bet Your Buns; Nile Valley Herb tea; Oaxacan Tamaleo; Jenny's Cactus Lace; Paw Bakery; Greater Austin Clay Artists, and Deirdre Earls with some special advice on how to get best nutrition in Austin.

Not Here 1/14: Asters Ethiopian, Reena's Organics, Southside Kolaches and Finca Pura Vida Farm (Reena's, Aster's and Southside will be back next week). Also Providence Hill Farm; Harvest Time Farm; and Creatlery (all out until Feb. 4); Sticky Toffee Pudding is out until early spring!

NOW IN SEASON
Vegetables: Tomatoes are in, come early! Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, chard, collards, salad greens and lettuces are here. Beets, turnips, and radishes. Carrots abound. P2 Organics has some sweet bell peppers along with butternut squashes. Lots of cilantro, green onions.

Fruits: Did you see Hersh's lemons from Indian Hills? Make a lovely lemon meringue pie! Reena's has the sweetest, juciest Marrs oranges in Central Texas.

Nuts: Hersh of Indian Hills Farm will be bringing in pecans. They look fab.

Meats: FRESH CHICKEN now offered at the Market! Fresh, never frozen chicken is coming from right in Travis County from Barnison Farm in all types of cuts and Cornish Game hens, along with the whole frozen chickens from Providence Hill Farm (they are back Feb. 4). Bison, beef, pork, sausage, bacon, emu meat and oil products and eggs. Thunderheart Bison is only one of two producers in the U.S. that conduct field harvests with respect. Bison health benefits include more omega 3 than salmon and great levels of beta carotene and CLA.

PLEASE BRING CLEAN CARDBOARD EGG CARTONS TO THE MARKET; these can be reused by the smaller 'yard' egg farmers. Bring them to the farmers selling eggs--they'll gladly take them off your hands.

Dairy: READY, SET, HOLD IT....GOAT CHEESE becomes available in February and April! "Maid" in the Shade Farm--will be back in February. West Wind Goat Dairy will be back in April.

Baked Goods: Get Texas French Bread's habit forming chibatta and baguettes. Brownies, cookies, granola, scones, biscotti and kolaches.

Flowers: Don't get corporate flowers from far-away places! Buy the special spring flowers from Arnosky Family Farm in the Texas Hill Country. Get really long-lasting flowers, locally grown.

Plants: Vegetable starts, trees, ferns, cacti, ornamentals, and herbs come in March.

Assorted: Gazpacho, pestos, soups (TRY THE SWEET PEPPER..yum), chocolate, and preserves. Congratulations to Tom Pedersen of Cocoa Puro (Kakawa Chocolate) for making the SAVEUR Magazine's top 100 list! What an honor for the sooooo delicious chocolate original that he makes--it's there every week on Saturdays, so check it out!

Ready-to-Eat: Breakfast and lunch fajita tacos, tamales, savory kolaches, quiches (back early spring), soups, Ethiopian food, and coffee. LOTS of rehydrating drinks, including: hot hibiscus tea (Nile Valley Herbs, cranberry refresher (Southside Kolaches) and water sold at the Information Booth. Coffee, and hot chocolate at Texas Coffee Traders.

Crafts and arts: Specially designed t-shirts, soaps, paintings, jewelry, soy candles, cloth purses, aprons, yoga mat holders, clothing, and clayworks. Gifts of all kinds that are handmade, LOCAL, and sold directly by the creator!

Services: CAFÉ AREA by the band, great for people watching and music aficionados; accupuncture and massage (ahhhh...) under the trees in the park.
