Meet the Farmers

Chickamaw Farm & Ranch

Bill McCranie of Chickamaw Farm & Ranch
- Suzanne Santos

We missed Bill McCrainie last week because it just is taking a little while longer to ripen out those blueberries. It will be a couple of weeks, according to Bill, so keep awaitin', we will let you know.

Sheldon William (Bill) McCranie and his wife Nancy Chester McCranie have been building a farm operation for the past seven years. Located out in McDade in Bastrop County, the 72 plus acres they own have gone through developing stages of growth in cattle pastures and catfish ponds, and fruit producing trees and bushes.

Spurred into farming in their quest for better nutrition, flavor and sustainability, the couple, along with their two children, Cassady Clark Chester McCranie and Patrick Ray Chester McCranie, are on the cusp of getting into the direct marketing realm of farming. Although their cattle and fish are not ready for market, their blueberries sure will be.

They approach the growing with a methodical attention to detail. Says Bill, "We know exactly what everything growing here is getting or not getting. The soil is tested and organic nutrients are added as needed for healthier soil and therefore a healthier fruit or vegetable." At the same time, the family leaves the final outcome up to a power that is greater than even science or detailed methods can determine. When asked who helps him on the farm to grow, Bill answers with unabashed humility, "GOD."

Bill is enthusiastic about the synergy and excitement that the Austin Farmers' Market will produce, mixing up the urban residents with the rural farm families and all the quality produce that they have to offer. "I believe it will be a happy and healthy atmosphere for people to meet, shop and enjoy the rare ambiance surrounding Austin."
